Practice valuation is an estimate of what a clinic is worth as a business, based mainly on its sustainable profit and how well it runs without the founder.
What it means
Practice valuation answers the question: if you sold your clinic, brought in a partner or raised funds, what would it be worth? For most practices, the answer depends on sustainable profit and how much of that profit depends on you personally.
A clinic where every patient comes for one doctor, and every decision sits with that doctor, is hard to value highly, because the business may not survive if they step back. A clinic with systems, a strong team, clean numbers, steady referrals and a recognised brand is worth far more, even at similar revenue.
Valuation is not just for exit plans. Thinking about it early pushes you to build a practice that runs well without you, which also makes daily life easier.
How to calculate it
Practice value = sustainable annual profit × a valuation multiple
The multiple depends on the buyer, speciality, location, growth and how independent the practice is from its founder. It is agreed in negotiation with professional advice, not looked up in a table.
For example, a clinic makes ₹60,00,000 in sustainable annual profit after paying a fair doctor's salary. If a buyer agreed a multiple of 3, the value would be ₹60,00,000 × 3 = ₹1,80,00,000. The multiple here is made up for illustration only.
What good looks like
HBA does not publish valuation multiples. Higher sustainable profit and less dependence on the founder are always better. HBA's profit margin benchmark of around 50 to 60%, with books closed by the seventh of each month, is a strong base.
How to improve it
- Keep clean, monthly books with a fair salary for every doctor, including you.
- Build documented processes with SOP manuals so the team can run the practice day to day.
- Develop other doctors and a strong coordinator, so patients trust the clinic, not only one person.
- Grow recurring revenue through recall, care plans and referrals.
- Plan early with wealth and exit advice, years before you need it.

Frequently asked questions
How is a clinic valued in India?
Most valuations start with sustainable annual profit, after a fair salary for the doctors, then apply a multiple agreed between buyer and seller. The multiple depends on speciality, location, growth and how much the practice depends on the founder. Always take professional financial and legal advice.
How can I increase the value of my practice?
Raise sustainable profit and reduce dependence on yourself. Keep clean monthly books, document your processes, build a team and other doctors patients trust, and grow recurring revenue through recall and referrals. Buyers pay more for a practice that runs well when the founder is not there.
