What is patient financing (emi)?

Quick answer

Patient financing lets patients pay for treatment in monthly instalments, or EMI, through a lender or the clinic, instead of paying the full amount upfront.

What it means

Patient financing means offering a way to spread the cost of treatment over time. In India this is usually an EMI plan through a healthcare finance partner, a card EMI, or an instalment plan agreed directly with the clinic.

It matters because cost is often a timing problem, not a value problem. A patient may be sure they want a treatment but unable to pay the full amount this month. Without financing, they either delay, choose a smaller plan, or go elsewhere. With a clear EMI option, they can start the care they need now.

Always explain the terms honestly, including any interest or fees, and let the patient decide without pressure.

How to calculate it

EMI uptake = patients who chose financing ÷ patients offered financing × 100

Also track consult conversion for patients offered EMI versus those who were not, so you can see whether it changes decisions.

For example, a coordinator offers EMI to 40 patients in a month. 12 choose to use it. EMI uptake = 12 ÷ 40 × 100 = 30%.

What good looks like

HBA does not publish an EMI uptake benchmark. What matters is that cost stops being the reason patients delay care. HBA tracks financing weekly alongside consult conversion, which has a benchmark of 30 to 50% for elective care.

How to improve it

  • Mention EMI as a normal option for every plan above a set amount, not only when a patient objects.
  • Train the coordinator to explain the monthly amount, total cost and any fees in plain words.
  • Choose finance partners with quick approval and clear terms. Our patient financing setup covers this.
  • Show the monthly figure on written plan summaries sent on WhatsApp.
  • Never push financing on a patient who prefers to pay another way.

Frequently asked questions

Should my clinic offer EMI to patients?

If you offer elective treatments above a few thousand rupees, EMI usually helps. It turns a large upfront amount into manageable monthly payments, so patients can start the right plan instead of a smaller one. Explain the terms honestly, including any interest or fees, and never pressure anyone into it.

When should the front desk or coordinator mention EMI?

Mention it as a normal option while presenting the plan, for every treatment above an amount you decide in advance. Waiting until the patient objects to cost makes it feel like a rescue. Offering it calmly upfront lets patients choose the plan first and the payment method second.
