Google Ads for Chennai Clinics: Campaigns, Pages and Real Costs

Quick answer

Google Ads work for Chennai clinics when every treatment has its own campaign and landing page, keywords are split into treatment, cost, near me and condition searches, and negative keywords are ready before launch. Target the areas patients really travel from, including nearby districts, run ads only when calls get answered, and judge every rupee by cost per treated patient.

An eye surgeon in Chennai showed me his Google Ads account with some pride. Lots of clicks, a low cost per click, and a steady stream of form fills. Then we looked at the search terms. A large share of the money had gone to people searching for spectacle shops, eye drops, free check-ups and nursing courses.

The ads were working. They were just working for the wrong people.

I will use an eye care clinic offering cataract surgery and LASIK as the example here. The same structure works for any treatment that patients search for by name.

Which Chennai clinics should use Google Ads?

Google is for intent. It catches people who already know what they want. In Chennai, that includes searches like "cataract surgery cost", "LASIK in Chennai", "sinus surgery near me", "kidney stone treatment" or "dental implants Velachery".

It works best when you have:

  • A page for each treatment, not just a homepage.
  • Someone answering calls during every hour the ads run.
  • Calls, forms and WhatsApp clicks counted as conversions.
  • A clear number for what a treated patient is worth.

If patients describe your treatment as a feeling rather than a name, start with Meta instead.

How should the campaigns be built?

One campaign per treatment. Cataract is one campaign. LASIK is another. Each gets its own budget, so you always know what each one costs you.

Inside each campaign, split the searches by intent:

Ad group Example searches Where the ad should send them
Treatment "LASIK surgery Chennai" The LASIK page, with the method and steps
Cost "LASIK cost in Chennai" The same page, opening with how plans and payments work
Near me "eye hospital near Anna Nagar" The page for the clinic nearest that area
Condition "blurry vision at night" A plain explanation page with a check-up invitation

Start with exact and phrase match. Broad match without data drifts quickly, as that eye surgeon found out.

What should Chennai clinics put on the negative list?

Build it before launch, then add to it every week from the search terms report. For an eye clinic, a starting list might include: free, camp, spectacles, frames, lens price, contact lens shop, eye drops, course, nursing, optometry admission, job, salary, government, home remedy, and images.

Every speciality has its own junk searches. A dental clinic will see "dental college", "BDS fees" and "dentist job". An orthopaedic clinic will see "physiotherapy course" and "knee pain exercises PDF". Read the report every week, and do not close it until each bad search is a negative and each good one is a keyword.

Patients in Chennai also search in Tamil and in Tamil words typed in English letters. The report is where you will find those phrases. Turn the useful ones into keywords, and make sure the person answering the phone is comfortable in Tamil.

How far should you target from Chennai?

Set the area by treatment.

  • Routine visits and reviews: a realistic travel radius around each clinic. Many patients will not cross the city for a routine appointment.
  • Surgery and high-value plans: the whole city, plus the nearby districts that already send you patients, such as Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur and Chengalpattu.
  • Further away: a separate campaign for towns in your CRM where patients travel in for surgery, in Tamil Nadu or from neighbouring states.

Keep the far campaign separate. Its patients need a different page that explains how many visits are needed, how long each takes, and what the family should plan for. And it lets you see what those patients really cost.

What should the landing page say?

Take the cataract page as an example. A patient, or more often a son or daughter searching for a parent, lands on it from an ad. In a few seconds, they want to know three things: is this the right place, is it safe, and what will it cost?

So the page should open with a headline in their words, like "Cataract surgery in Chennai, explained simply". Then who it is for, what happens step by step from the first check-up to the follow-up visits, the lens choices explained honestly without promising results, the risks, and how pricing and payment work. Add the doctor's experience and genuine reviews. Put click-to-call and WhatsApp buttons where a thumb can reach them without scrolling. For families coming from other districts, add a short section on how many visits are needed and how long each takes.

And schedule the ads for the hours your desk is fully staffed. A call from a worried family that rings out at 8 pm is the most expensive click in the account.

How do you judge the budget?

Never by clicks or leads. By cost per treated patient.

Example: your cataract campaign spends ₹80,000 in a month and brings 100 leads at ₹800 each. 8 patients have surgery, so ₹10,000 per treated patient. Your LASIK campaign spends ₹80,000 and brings 200 leads at ₹400 each, but only 5 go ahead, so ₹16,000 per treated patient.

The cheaper leads were the more expensive patients. If a LASIK patient is worth ₹80,000 to you in the first year, ₹16,000 sits right at the top of the 10 to 20% range, so you keep the campaign and work on its page and follow-up rather than cutting it.

Send back to Google which leads booked and were treated, so it learns what a real patient looks like. Hold off on automated bidding until there is a steady flow of tracked conversions. Run a small campaign on your own name and clinic name. And keep the rules: no prescription drugs, no guarantees, no unproven treatments, and no remarketing based on health. Our patient acquisition team builds accounts this way, with pages from our websites and search team. For eye clinics, see our eye care page.

We work with clinics across India, including Chennai, mostly on video calls. See our Chennai page.

The short version

  • One campaign and one landing page per treatment, with keywords split by intent.
  • Build a speciality-specific negative list before launch and grow it every week.
  • Target by treatment: tight for routine visits, wider for surgery, separate for far districts.
  • Judge every campaign by cost per treated patient, and run ads only when calls get answered.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Ads expensive for clinics in Chennai?

It can be, which is why structure matters more than budget. A tight account with good negatives, one page per treatment and fast call handling usually wastes far less. Judge it by cost per treated patient. If that sits within 10 to 20% of a patient's first-year value, it is working.

Should I target patients outside Chennai with Google Ads?

Only from places that already send you patients, and in a separate campaign. Those patients need a page that explains visits, timing and travel. Keeping them separate also shows you what each far-away patient really costs, so you can decide whether to grow or cut it.

What landing page should my Google Ads use?

A page about the exact treatment searched, never the homepage. Use a headline in the patient's words, who it is for, the options, the steps, honest risks, and click-to-call and WhatsApp buttons visible on a phone without scrolling. Match the ad's promise to the page exactly.

How often should I check my clinic's Google Ads account?

Every week. Block half an hour to read the search terms report, add negatives, turn good searches into keywords, and check booked and treated patients by campaign. Avoid changing many settings every few days, because the account needs time to settle.
