Plan completion rate is the percentage of patients who finish every session or stage of the treatment plan they started, rather than dropping out partway through.
What it means
Plan completion rate tells you how many patients who started a treatment course actually finished it. A patient who signs up for six sessions and stops after two has not received the care that was planned, and the clinic has lost the rest of the plan's value.
Drop-outs rarely announce themselves. A patient misses one session, nobody calls, and two months later they are gone. Many clinics never measure this, so they never see how much care and revenue leaks out after the plan is accepted.
How to calculate it
Plan completion rate = patients who completed their plan ÷ patients who started a plan that should have finished by now × 100
Only include plans whose scheduled end date has passed, so patients still in treatment do not drag the number down.
For example, 60 patients started plans that should have finished by the end of last month. 42 completed every session. Plan completion rate = 42 ÷ 60 × 100 = 70%.
What good looks like
HBA does not publish a plan completion benchmark. Higher is better, and HBA tracks it weekly. The most useful view is where patients drop out, for example after session two, because that points to the fix.
How to improve it
- Book all sessions at the start, with dates and times, instead of booking one at a time.
- Send a WhatsApp reminder before each session and a short check-in after it.
- Call any patient who misses a session the same day and rebook them kindly.
- Explain at the start what results look like over time, so patients do not stop at the slow middle stage.
- Use a plan completion tracker that flags anyone overdue for their next visit.

Frequently asked questions
Why do patients stop treatment halfway?
Common reasons are missed sessions that nobody follows up, slow visible progress in the middle of a course, cost worries and simple busyness. Booking all sessions upfront, reminding before each one, calling after any missed visit and setting honest expectations at the start all reduce drop-outs.
Does plan completion affect clinic revenue?
Yes. When patients stop partway, the clinic loses the remaining value of the plan, and those patients are less likely to return or refer others. Tracking completion also helps patient care, because it shows who has not received the treatment the doctor recommended.
