Paediatricians get more patients by winning families early and keeping them for years. Build relationships with obstetricians and maternity hospitals so you meet families at birth, make your clinic easy to find for "child specialist near me", show up in the parent communities of your area, and make availability, short waits and clear explanations your reputation. Track families, not visits, because one family can stay with you for eighteen years.
A paediatric practice does not win patients the way most clinics do. You are not chosen by the patient. You are chosen by a mother at 2 am with a feverish baby, by a father comparing two clinics on Google, by a grandmother who trusts the doctor who treated her other grandchild, and by a WhatsApp group of forty new parents in the same apartment complex.
And once a family chooses you, they may stay for eighteen years, bring every sibling and tell every new parent they meet. That makes paediatrics one of the most valuable specialities to grow well, and one of the easiest to grow badly with the wrong kind of marketing.
How do families choose a paediatrician?
In my experience, parents weigh a small number of things far more than anything else:
- Availability. Will someone answer when my child is unwell at night or on a Sunday?
- Waiting time. Will my sick child sit in a crowded waiting room for an hour?
- Explanation. Does the doctor explain things calmly, without scaring us or brushing us off?
- Trust on medicines. Will the doctor give only what my child needs?
- Recommendation. What do other parents I know say?
Your clinic's growth plan should make each of these visible, before a parent ever walks in.
Notice what is missing from that list: fancy interiors and glossy ads with smiling babies. Parents notice those, but they do not decide on them. A Google profile that shows your evening hours clearly, a website page that explains exactly how after-hours calls work, and a front desk that sends "Doctor is running 15 minutes late" on WhatsApp will do more for your growth than any campaign.
When does a family first choose a paediatrician?
Often at birth, or just before it. The obstetrician who delivers the baby, the maternity hospital, the neonatal visit in the ward and the first vaccination are the moments where most families pick their child's doctor.
So the first growth channel for most paediatricians is a relationship with obstetricians and maternity hospitals.
- Map every obstetrician and maternity hospital in your area, and note who already sends you families.
- Be easy to involve. A direct line for the obstetric team and a reliable neonatal visit when asked.
- Report back, with the parents' consent, after the first visit: "Baby seen, doing well, next visit booked."
- Teach. Offer antenatal sessions for expecting parents at the hospital on newborn care and the first weeks at home.
- Never pay or take a cut for referrals. It is unethical, and it turns trust into a transaction.
Which three channels should a paediatric clinic start with?
Start with three: one free, one paid and one that builds trust.
Free: your Google profile and website. Parents search "child specialist near me" or "baby vaccination near me" constantly. Your profile, with exact hours, real photos of your waiting area and fresh reviews, is often the first thing they see. Build pages for vaccinations, newborn care, well-baby visits and the common problems parents search for.
Paid: Google search ads, for the searches parents make when they need a doctor now, or are looking for a new one after moving to the area.
Trust: the obstetrician network, plus parent community sessions. Talks for expecting parents at maternity hospitals, sessions for new parents in housing societies, and school health talks put you in the room with exactly the families you want.
On day one, before any ads, go back to your own records. Every child who missed a vaccination visit, and every family that has not been in for a year, is worth a call.
How do you show up in parent communities without spamming them?
Parent WhatsApp groups, apartment groups and school groups are where recommendations travel fastest in India. You cannot buy your way into them, and you should never try. What you can do is be useful in the places they gather.
- Run a monthly new-parent session at a housing society or community hall on one topic, such as the first year of vaccinations or the first weeks at home.
- Give parents something worth forwarding: a one-page guide to your clinic's hours, how to reach you after hours and how vaccination reminders work.
- Follow up within twenty-four hours with every parent who signed up for a visit, with their permission.
Example: Say a society session brings 30 parents, and 9 ask to register their child with the clinic. Your team calls all 9 the next day, and 6 book a first visit. If one family is worth around ₹25,000 a year to you across consultations and vaccination visits, those 6 families are worth about ₹1.5 lakh in the first year alone, and far more over the years they stay.
Which numbers should a paediatric clinic track?
Track the eight weekly numbers, but think in families, not visits. Add three paediatric measures: new families registered each month, vaccination visits due versus completed, and families who visited in the last twelve months.
A clinic that adds twenty new families a month and keeps most of them grows steadily for years, even if its monthly visit count looks flat in a quiet season. For cost per new patient, use the family's first-year value. If a family is worth ₹25,000 in the first year, 10 to 20% of that, so ₹2,500 to ₹5,000 per new family, is a sensible ceiling.
What should paediatric marketing never do?
Never use fear to sell to worried parents. Never promise outcomes. Never show a child's face, name or story without written consent from the parents, and think twice even then. Avoid claims you cannot prove, and talk about care, not medicines. Check the current NMC regulations before every campaign.

Frequently asked questions
How can a new paediatrician build a practice?
Start where families choose their child's doctor: build relationships with obstetricians and maternity hospitals, offer antenatal sessions for expecting parents and be reliable for neonatal visits. Set up a strong Google profile with exact hours and real photos, run Google ads for local searches and hold new-parent sessions in nearby housing societies.
Do paediatricians need to advertise?
Many grow mainly through obstetrician referrals and word of mouth, but a strong Google profile and well-run Google ads help families who have just moved to the area or need a doctor quickly. Keep every message calm and truthful, avoid fear, and never use a child's image without written parental consent.
How do paediatricians get referrals from obstetricians?
Be easy to involve, with a direct line for the obstetric team and reliable neonatal visits. With parents' consent, report back after the baby's first visit, offer antenatal education sessions at the hospital and keep the relationship going all year. Referral fees, in either direction, are never acceptable.
What matters most to parents when choosing a child specialist?
Parents usually care most about whether someone will answer when their child is unwell, how long they will wait at the clinic, whether the doctor explains things calmly, whether only necessary medicines are given and what other parents say. Make each of these visible on your profile, website and in the clinic.
